Inside the Build: 1968 Camaro Tubular Chassis Pro Modified Drag Car

We don't say this lightly — when a 1968 Camaro Pro Modified rolls through the doors at Magus Motorsport, the whole workshop stops. This is one of those builds.

We recently got our hands on a stunning 1968 Chevrolet Camaro built on a full tubular chassis — a purpose-built Pro Modified drag car that means serious business. And here's the twist: this isn't just a strip car. The plan is to build this as a true drag and drive machine — a car that can be driven on the road as much as it hits the track.

The Car

The first generation Camaro body is one of the most iconic silhouettes in motorsport, and on a tube chassis Pro Mod, it's nothing short of jaw-dropping. Stripped of everything unnecessary, the body sits over a full chromoly tubular chassis designed for high-horsepower drag applications — lightweight, incredibly stiff, and built to handle whatever you throw at it.

The Powertrain

Under the skin, this build is running a Lexus 3UZ V8 — a bulletproof, naturally over-engineered platform that's become a favourite in the performance world for good reason. Paired with a BMW 8HP automatic gearbox, the drivetrain combination brings serious strength, smooth power delivery, and the kind of reliability you need in a car that's going to see real road miles.

And if that wasn't enough — it's going twin turbo. Turbosmart products will be used throughout the forced induction system, ensuring boost control and reliability are dialled in from the start.

Electronics & Control

Haltech Electronics will be running the show from an engine management perspective, providing full control over the 3UZ and giving the flexibility needed to manage a complex, high-powered setup like this. Haltech is the natural choice for a build of this calibre — proven in drag, street, and everything in between.

The Fabrication

The entire build and fabrication is being carried out in-house at Magus Motorsport. From the fuel system and charge cooling pipework to custom mounts, brackets, and exhaust fabrication — every piece is being precision TIG welded to the exact requirements of the build. When it's a drag and drive car, every component has to work hard in two very different environments, and that's exactly the kind of challenge we thrive on.

This Is One to Watch

This build is going to be something special. A 1968 Camaro, tube chassis, twin turbo Lexus V8, BMW 8HP, Haltech management, Turbosmart boost control — built to drive on the road and destroy the strip. Keep your eyes on this one.
